I will conclude this exploration of Tolkien adaptations in different media with a mention of Tolkien games, both physical and virtual. Of course there is a reciprocal interaction here, because Tolkien’s
work was a huge influence on the development of the original Dungeons & Dragons gaming system in 1974, so much so that TSR was required to change the names of certain fantasy races that were too close to the original. Nowadays an officially licensed version is available in the form of The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying using 5e D&D rules. Meanwhile, computer gaming of Tolkien’s world dates all the way back to the 1982 text adventure game of The Hobbit playable on a Commodore 64.
This sort of gaming also exploded in popularity after the LOTR film trilogy, from the 2003 FPS version of The Hobbit through the film-based games of 2002-2004 and the massively popular MMORPG The Lord of the Rings Online since 2007 (and of course many others). Does gaming in the world of Middle Earth appeal to you? If so, which do you prefer as Tolkien gaming goes; live action, single player or MMORPG?
