In an amusing turn of events, Emily Wilson, the UPenn classicist whose contemporary English translation of The Odyssey was allegedly the basis for the dialogue in the blockbuster 2026 film, panned the movie in an interview which soon went viral. She described the screenplay as “abysmal” and said, “I would be ashamed to have written any part of this script.” Given my own previous comments about the film’s dialogue published on this site, I feel this is evidence great minds think alike…in all seriousness though, her remarks immediately ignited a firestorm online. Particularly noteworthy were the defenders of the film who had used Christopher Nolan’s supposed reliance on her translation as a crutch to defend the film and its dialogue, only for them to immediately pivot to scorching attacks on Professor Wilson the moment she revealed she was very far from being a fan. One critic accused her of “using the crude language of MAGA folks”, because of course Ivy League humanities professors are well known for their fervent support of President Trump and the GOP….suffice to say this brouhaha only confirms both the politicisation of the film, and the dubiousness of its critical celebration from the beginning. I maintain my position that in a decade or so, the film will not be as highly regarded by critics as it is today.
